Biography
Received his bachelor's degree from Marmara University in 1987. Completed his PhD in physics at Heriot-Watt University in the UK in 1993.
Served as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, working on fiber optic communication systems.
Appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at Boğaziçi University; promoted to Associate Professor in 1996.
Served as a visiting professor at Gunma University (Japan), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Heriot-Watt University, and the University of Stuttgart.
Served as a faculty member at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Sabancı University. Played an active role in establishing the faculty laboratories and developing the curriculum.
Joined the Physics Department at Boğaziçi University as a professor. Served as the Chair of the Physics Department between 2013 and 2020.
Serving as the Rector of Boğaziçi University.
Visiting Professorships
Served as a visiting professor at the University of Stuttgart (Germany), Gunma University (Japan), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and Heriot-Watt University.
Research Areas
Conducts research in the fields of fiber optic communication and sensors, nanoparticle physics, quantum optics, quantum computing, and quantum cryptography.

Member of the Executive Board of TÜBİTAK and the Interuniversity Council, and serves as a Council Member at the Turkish-Japanese Science and Technology University.
